Waste Not, dance, sound and art is a free family festival at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre on Sunday, 5 June to celebrate the Penrith community’s’ achievements in diverting waste from landfill.
All activities are free and suitable for people of all ages and abilities. People are encouraged to come along to enjoy parkour, drumming, dance and art performances and displays. There will also be a sound installation by digital media artist Imogen Cranna and a visual art installation facilitated by Western Sydney artist, David Capra with Penrith Community . Costumes are made by visual artist, Nicole Barakat
Seating for the two performances of IN OUR HANDS, a dance work directed by Kay Armstrong featuring an original sound score by Thomas Smith is strictly limited so book early to avoid disappointment. The choreography is by guest dance artists Margot Politis, Diane Busuttil and Omer Backley-Astrachan.
The performance is also in collaboration with local community members Agile Not Fragile and students from Penrith Christian, Henry Fulton Public and Wycliffe Christian schools who are joined by local young people in a vocal performance directed by guest choir master James Paul.
Audiences will enjoy thought-provoking movement, theatre and original sound scores as intergenerational performers join together to make you reflect on the future of our environment which is “in our hands”.
“This project is about bringing together communities, layering ideas, collaborating over time to create something unexpected and unique, something from which we can grow. Across the process we will learn about how we can help our environment, then share this with the rest of the community in a day of free activities for the old and young.” - Kay Armstrong, Waste Not Artistic Director
