2019 Create Space Dance Residency
Recipient Dean Walsh
Create Space Dance Residency is an initiative between Ausdance NSW, Sydney Opera House, and FORM Dance Projects who together recognised the lack of development opportunities for artists with disability and wish to offer a supportive and safe space for these artists to continue to expand their work and practice. The residency invited early, mid and established career independent dance artists, collectives, and collaborators of any dance. The residency administered by Ausdance NSW included a $5000 bursary supported by Sydney Opera House and 2 weeks studio space with FORM Dance Projects, in the Jubliee Room at Parramatta Town Hall. The residency will return in 2020.
The 2019 inaugural Create Space Residency was awarded to dancer and choreographer Dean Walsh. Dean is an award-winning Australian contemporary dance and performance practitioner, teacher and writer. He is Autistic (higher functioning) and identifies as living with disability. He has been at the forefront of many major shifts within the Australian arts and cultural landscape since 1991 and has crossed over several sectors within the arts and environmental science communities, having extensive involvement in, and a passionate advocate for, the national contemporary dance, queer performance and disability-inclusive communities, as well as the environmental science sectors - all progressive developments throughout his career.
During his residency Dean continued to develop his work ‘EGOSystem,’ addressing the impact of climate change we are currently facing, and the dramatic impact plastic waste has on our eco-system. Dean states, “We’re experiencing changes to all manner of systems, at an unprecedented scale, across the planet. Environmental living systems, economic, political, religious, social among many others.” His work also addresses the impact environmental change has on human’s emotional wellbeing.
