DEVELOPING PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE TO PLAN COHERENT AND ENGAGING TEACHING PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE STUDENT LEARNING

SUITABLE FOR STAGE 4, 5, 6 

Professional development day with Carla Cherrie, HSC dance examiner. Come and unpack composition in the curriculum and learn how to lead your students to higher attainment. Suitable for HSC Dance Teachers, or years 7-10 teachers looking for further professional development. This all-day workshop is specially designed for teachers of HSC Dance and looks at the Core Composition outcomes.

IN THIS WORKSHOP, WE EXPLORE

• • • Morning Session: Developing students understanding; working with stimulus and creating motifs with intent through abstraction.
    • Middle Session: Creating meaningful phrases; developing and advancing compositional skills in your students.
    • Afternoon Session: Breaking down the interview process; preparing students to talk about their own works.

This session is for teachers with a range of fitness levels. All you need to bring are clothes to dance in, curiosity and enthusiasm.

PRIMARY CREATIVE ARTS DANCE 101:

DEVELOPING PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE TO PLAN COHERENT AND ENGAGING TEACHING PROGRAMS TO IMPROVE STUDENT LEARNING

SUITABLE FOR ALL TEACHERS 

This all-day workshop is specially designed for primary and school teachers (generalist or specialist Dance/PE/music /Drama/PDHPE or other, K-6). Develop your professional knowledge and professional skills. This course will focus on upskilling you in the teaching of the Creative Arts syllabus – Dance. With links to the key foundations of the syllabus, the course will unpack the outcomes Performing, Composing and Appreciating. 

IN THIS WORKSHOP, WE EXPLORE

Teachers will develop their professional knowledge and skills and will gain NESA accredited hours at proficient level. Teachers will expand their knowledge in:

• • • Performance:
      • an understanding of safe dance practice and appropriate dance technique in the performance of combinations, sequences and dances.
      • aspects of the elements of dance in dance performance 
      • an understanding of aspects of performance quality through the performance of combinations
    • Composition:
      • • exploring aspects of the elements of dance in response to a range of stimuli 
        • composing dance movement, using the elements of dance 
    • Appreciation:
      • • • describing dance performances through the elements of dance 
          • identifying dance works of art express ideas

DANCE TEACHING WITH INCLUSIVE PRACTICE

A DIVERSITY SKILL SET FOR DANCE TEACHERS – TAFE NSW PARTNERSHIP (Subsidised course)

TAFE NSW PARTNERSHIP (Subsidised) 

In partnership with Accessible Arts, Ausdance NSW ran a 1-day course facilitated by Vicky Malin, who joined us from the UK (2018). Vicky worked with Candoco and danced with the Company for 6 years from 2008 to 2014. After consultation with this initial group of participants, this led us to formalising a qualification in partnership with ACFIPS and TAFE NSW. Dance artists were offered the chance to attend a fully subsidized 1-day course gaining 2 units of competency, Teaching with Diversity and Developing Skills in Improvisation. 

Following on from the 2018 course, in August 2019 13 students participated in this one day funded accredited dance course developed by TAFE NSW, in collaboration with ACFIBS and Ausdance NSW. 

The course addressed the skills and knowledge needed to teach students who may have specific needs. Participants studied and practiced with industry colleagues and the content covered:

• How to work well with people with disability/diverse backgrounds
• Appropriate language, cultural understanding, etiquette
• Diversity – tackling issues and challenging topics
• Improvisation – working creatively and engaging with people who may move, think or feel differently

Upon successful completion of assessment tasks students received a Statement of Attainment for two competency units: Work effectively with diversity and Develop dance improvisation skills. The day was facilitated by Jessica Conneely, a professional dancer and teacher who has vast experience in teaching dance to diverse participants and also teaching teachers how to improvise and adapt to the variety of class participants they will encounter. Ausdance NSW will be looking at re-running this course in 2020 regionally. Ausdance NSW would like to thank venue partner FORM Dance Projects for the use of their studio space at Parramatta Town Hall.

Ausdance NSW was looking at rerunning this course with ACFIPS in 2021 however this has been put on hold due to the COVID 19 lockdown, stay tuned for more information.

AMY BUTLER MASTERCLASS

Ausdance NSW, supported by the British Council hosted Amy Butler’s masterclass in 2020, introducing inclusive contemporary dance technique as practiced by StopGap Dance Company. It focused on developing the ability to access many different qualities in the body through contact work and improvisation. The day culminated in an exploration of restriction and the creativity that can develop from this with the opportunity to craft set group material. 

Amy Butler is a UK based dance artist, currently working as a senior dance artist, mentor and rehearsal director for Stopgap Dance Company, rehearsal director for Akram Khan Company, specifically for the pieces Chotto Desh and the new re-work of Xenos, ChottoXenos, choreographic consultant for Highly Sprung and delivers intensives internationally, most recently for Solodos Danza in Costa Rica.

VICKY MARLIN MASTERCLASS

AUSDANCE NSW AND ACCESSIBLE ARTS
‘INCLUSIVE APPROACHES TO DANCE MOVEMENT.’

Led by Vicky Malin (UK), the workshop (held in 2018), presented by Ausdance NSW and Accessible Arts, introduced approaches to inclusive teachers through practical exercises and discussion. An opportunity was given to the participants to reflect on their own practices and the practices of others and confidently explore ways to open up their work up to more people.

Vicky Malin is an Independent Artist living in London, UK. She performs, teaches and makes work with a focus on dance and movement. Vicky originally trained in theatre and psychology and later in life became a performer and teacher with Candoco Dance Company. She is passionate about working inclusively and is also a one to one life coach. She delivers a variety of creative projects for all abilities, ages, and experience of dance as well as mentoring emerging inclusive companies internationally. Vicky recently graduated from Trinity Laban and Independent Dance with a Masters in Creative Practice and is pursuing this particular research to create a one to one performance exploring the movement of our hands.

FUTURE MAKERS AND MOVERS (FMM)

Future Makers and Movers (FMM) was a professional development series for dance teachers in schools and studios. It was designed as an opportunity for teachers to stay current and connected to top Australian dance makers and educators in the sector. FMM aims to empower the teacher and student to create innovative tools beyond genre and age lines, and advocate for dance in their schools, studios and communities. 

The first FMM event brought industry juggernaut, Vicki Van Hout, providing her tips of the trade in dance education. This Bangarra Dance Theatre alum and prestigious internationally renowned choreographer delved into how to get students performing, composing and observing choreography from a new light. Known for her vibrant energy and signature choreography, Vicki shared strategies to work with young dancers in the ever-changing dance sector. FMM concluded with a symposium where teachers voiced how they wanted to shape the future of dance education and in a judgement free environment.
