DAIR 2018


Ausdance NSW Dance Artist in Residence Program (DAIR) invites independent dance artists, collectives, collaborators and companies of any dance genre to submit proposals for the 2018 round 1 program.  


DAIR is a direct response to the ongoing challenges of access to affordable and appropriate spaces to dance artists for the development of dance making and practice. DAIR activities may involve creative development, research, mentorships, rehearsal and remounting of work. Applicants can apply for a residency of one or two weeks.


To be eligible, primary applicants should be NSW based and an Ausdance NSW member, however collaborators may be interstate or internationally based. You can become a member here www.ausdancensw.com.au


In 2018, DAIR is divided into two rounds.


  • Round 1 opens Monday November 6 2017
  • Round 1 closes Monday 27 November 2017
  • Round 1 outcomes will be announced on Wednesday Dec 13 2017
  • Round 2 will open in May 2018 for residencies in July-December


Applicants may apply for both rounds but may only be successful in one round per year.

DAIR recipients receive:

  • Residency space at host venue
  • Pre residency planning support from Ausdance NSW via a 30 minute phone call, Skype or face to face meeting
  • A studio visit from Ausdance NSW during the residency
  • Administrative support from Ausdance NSW for the showing of work during residency (if required)
  • Promotion of artist/residency through Ausdance NSW e-news and social media
  • Feedback session post residency with Ausdance NSW

Artists, Venues and Dates – Round One


Sue Healey is a choreographer and filmmaker based in Sydney.Experimenting with form and perception, Healey creates dance for diverse spaces and contexts: theatres, galleries and the camera.  Her work has toured to Asia, USA, UK and throughout Australia and New Zealand.Healey received a Creative Fellowship in 2014 from the Australia Council for Arts, and was made an Honorary Fellow of the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne 2015. Her films are widely acclaimed and have won awards including; 5 Australian Dance Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Dance on Film/New Media and Independent Dance, Winner Reeldance Australia and Il Coreografo Elettronico, Napolidanza, Italy.  She has created 10 major films with cinematographer Judd Overton, her key film collaborator, including the feature-length Virtuosi and the documentary The Golds.  Her 2017 films include En Route for the new Wynscreen public art project at Wynyard train station, City as Portrait Gallery currently being exhibited the Customshouse, Circular Quay. Sue is currently filming and creating On View: Asia, produced by West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, to become a major performance installation in Hong Kong, Japan, China and Taiwan in 2017/18 and 2019.  This work will open the Freespace theatre, one of the new theatres of the West Kowloon precinct in 2019.  The first stage performance installation will occur in Hong Kong in October 2017 at Artistree space in Hong Kong.

Sami Jane (Samantha Jane Smith) is a contemporary dancer & choreographer that moves with a unique style of fluidity and strength, she prides in her individuality and experimentation in both choreography and freestyle practices.Over the last few years Sami has performed in productions ‘We are sound - Train of Thought’, ‘Opus’, One - Dancing for Jane’. She has explored and exchanged movement ideas in London, L.A, Germany, France, Spain and Italy. Sami performs regularly at events around Sydney and continues to work independently on solo ventures and projects that push the boundaries of normality and explore the endless possibilities of movement.Sami is passionate about feminism, sexuality and equality and will be researching these ideas in her DAIR residency. 

Jasmin Luna is an Australian based, freelance, movement artist. Born and raised in Sydney, Jasmin has performed in The Dream Dance Company’s Enter The Vortex (2017) by Sarah Boulter, touring to Sydney, Wollongong, Adelaide, Canberra, Sunshine Coast and Wellington NZ. Jasmin has also performed in WeAreSOUND’s Train Of Thought (2017) by independent artist Callum Mooney in Sydney. She has participated in The Australian Dance Theatre Secondment Week, Body Weather De Quincy Company Training with Victoria Hunt, and El Danseu intensive in Les Piles, Spain. She has also been a part of developments with Callum Mooney, Lucy Doherty and Thomas Bradley. She has been a featured dancer in music videos such as The Future by Motez Feat. Antony & Cleopatra, Running to you by Amastro Feat. Ebony and Fine by IVES. Jasmin trained at Ev & Bow Full time Dance Training Centre and at The Sydney Dance Company Pre Professional Year, performing works by Narelle Benjamin, Kristina Chan and Rafael Bonachela, graduating in 2016.
