Building on the outcomes and momentum of the previous 2 years of Birrang, we are looking forward to another exciting year of collaboration, creativity and professional development for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancers and choreographers based in NSW.
There is one more opportunity to participate in Birrang: The Market Development Workshop, Friday 4 December.

Building an effective market development plan can be the most important part of any artist’s aim to bring their work to the stage and to new audiences. The Birrang Market Development workshop will focus on assisting dance artists and emerging producers build knowledge and skills to support their capacity to bring their work to final stage production, and ultimately be programmed for presentation and/or touring.

There are several parts to a market development plan, such as developing the most effective networks, responding to the right opportunities and being ready to negotiate with programmers and presenters. It is also very important to be able to manage how your work is marketed to ensure protection of the works’ cultural integrity.

The workshop will be led by Merindah Donnelly from BlakDance, who has many years experience working with artists, producers and funding bodies in the area of Market Development.

  • Venue: The Arts Exchange, 10 Hickson Rd, The Rocks.
  • Date: Friday 4 December 2015.
  • Time: 10.00am to 4.00pm (lunch provided)

The workshop is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance artists based in NSW.

The 2015 Birrang Creative Residency has been awarded to Jo Clancy, independent dance artist and creative director of the Blue Mountains based Wagana Aboriginal Dancers. The Residency provides Jo and her dancers the opportunity to conduct a creative development for a new work Gaurii – have you ever found a feather’. Gaurii is the Wiradjuri word for feather. The work focuses on creation stories, life cycles and habitats connected to the Emu, Lyrebird, Cockatoo and Crow.

Jo is a descendant of the Wiradjuri people of Western NSW and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Dance) degree from the University of Western Sydney. She has worked as an independent dance artist, performing and teaching, in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains for the last twenty years.

Jo is also the founder and director of the Wagana Aboriginal Dancers, a group of young Aboriginal women who under the Clancy’s guidance perform traditional dances, and create new contemporary works inspired by the Blue Mountains and Central NSW country. The group toured to Glasgow in 2014 where they performed Bangalang, at the Commonwealth Youth Dance Festival and in July this year they presented Sum of My Ancestors in Copenhagen as part of the Dance and the Child International conference.

Jo’s Birrang Residency will take place at NAISDA Dance College from 21 September to 1 October this year.
