BIRRANG

Birrang was first initiated in 2013 and continued through to 2015 and provided creative and professional development opportunities for Indigenous dance artists based in NSW. Birrang was responsible for building the capacity of each individual artist to realise their own goals, share creative ideas and practices and gain the skills and networks that will serve to strengthen their careers and the growing independent Indigenous dance sector across NSW. This program has achieved some significant outcomes for the participating artists including the development of new work and new professional networks, as well as guidance in managing and sustaining a professional career. The program is for artists working across the spectrum of cultural and creative dance – whether that be in a community context, education and/or performance and touring.

Below are the courses that were run as part of the Birrang program 2013-2015:

  • Creative Business course3 day course on running a creative business, offered in partnership with the Australian Film Television and Radio School, Open Courses program. (Sydney and Lismore location)
  • Dance Residency (NAISDA) – 2 week residency for one choreographer and up to three collaborators, including studio space and technical support, for a creative development project that aims towards a proposed performance. – recipient: Rayma Johnson
  • Creative Lab (Carriageworks) – 5 day Lab provides dance artists with time space and resources to focus on making work and sharing creative ideas under the leadership of experienced professionals.
  • Marketing Development Workshop – 1 day free workshop led by Merindah Donnelly from Blakdance and  focuses on assisting dance artists and emerging producers build knowledge and skills to support their capacity to bring their work to final stage production, and ultimately be programmed for presentation and/or touring.
  • Creative Residency (NAISDA) – 2 week residency awarded to Jo Clancy, independent dance artist and creative director of the Blue Mountains based Wagana Aboriginal Dancers. The Residency provides Jo and her dancers the opportunity to conduct a creative development for a new work Gaurii – have you ever found a feather’. Gaurii is the Wiradjuri word for feather. The work focuses on creation stories, life cycles and habitats connected to the Emu, Lyrebird, Cockatoo and Crow.
  • Building on Birrang – a discussion day facilitated by the coordinators of Birrang with the purpose to examine the outcomes of the Birrang initiative, and work together to envision how this momentum can be taken forward and built upon to achieve even more successful outcomes for Indigenous dance artists based in NSW.

Ausdance NSW is the key support & advocacy body, for the creation, presentation and practice of dance in NSW.
