Beyond The Training

Beyond the training

In 2014 Ausdance NSW presented in partnership with Critical Path the delivery of two workshops specifically to allow artists to gain a deeper understanding of established Artist practice with Anouk van Dijk and Rebecca Hilton.

Look out for more opportunites 2015.

Anouk Van Dijk - Artstic Director Chunky Move

In this workshop Chunky Move Artistic Director Anouk van Dijk will introduce Countertechnique, the movement method she developed throughout her twenty five year career as dancer, choreographer and teacher. The primary concern of this method is on developing an integrated approach to training, rehearsal and performance. Participants will be given a basic practical insight into the distinct elements that form Countertechnique, and how these can be applied in training and the creative process.Anouk van Dijk is a choreographer, dancer, Artistic Director and the creator behind the movement system, Countertechnique. She has created more than twenty full-length works that have toured internationally and locally, attracting broad audiences and critical acclaim. Van Dijk is the current Artistic Director of Victoria flagship contemporary dance company, Chunky Move.

Rebecca Hilton - Independent Artist

The making of a dance has always been the result of a complex set of relations, information and desires. Dancers contribute to the creative process in myriad ways, utilising embodied and experiential knowledges to generate movement vocabularies, develop methodologies and frame conceptual questions. What if we say that authorship is not the exclusive domain of the choreographer? What if we decide that creative hierarchies are fluid? What happens then? Whose work is this? In this workshop frame some activities exploring authorship, autonomy, collaboration and interpretation, research and experience some historic scores and practices collaborate on a folk dance of us, now, and work on dancing it together and talk with each other about anything that arises from these particular dancing experiences.

Rebecca Hilton is a Melbourne based performer, teacher, choreographer and director. Rebecca's choreographies have been presented by companies including Lucy Guerin Inc, BalletLab, Chunky Move, Laborgras (Ger), Mestizas (Arg) and La lagrima (Mex). She teaches extensively for companies, schools and in festivals through out the world including Sasha Waltz and Guests (Berlin), Impulse Tanz (Vienna), Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne), PARTS (Brussels), and Movement Research (NY).

Artist Feedback

In the gorgeous surrounds of Critical path, I thoroughly enjoyed leading an intense two day Beyond the Training intensive with a fantastically diverse group of Sydney artists. We were working primarily with ideas of authorship and interpretation. We spent our time generating set and improvised choreographies, re creating seminal scores from the annals of dance history and discussing the aesthetic stances, social behaviours, even philosophical concerns produced by these particular dancing experiences.Mainly we had the luxury of time and space in which to actively learn from each other. - Becky Hilton (workshop leader)

I had a fantastic time working with Becky and the other participants.Becky has had some extraordinary experiences throughout her career which she freely shared, partly in the form of good-spirited yet provocative paradigm shifts. Over the two days I made great connections with the other dancers and will hopefully work with some of them again in the future. All up, a great experience which I would happily recommend. - Julian Day (participant)
